Heartbreaking Sangli Tragedy: Storm Topples Wall, 6 Devotees Killed
Six devotees died, 12 hurt as a wall collapsed at Sangli's Margubai temple during a storm. PM Modi condoled the heartbreaking tragedy amid safety concerns.
What happened
It was a regular Tuesday evening at the temple near Motewadi village in Jat taluka. Around 350 devotees were there — Tuesdays always draw crowds. Then the sky turned. Strong winds, heavy rain, zero warning. People ran for cover. Some ducked beside a 9-foot wall near the shrine. It seemed safe. It wasn't.
A tin shed nearby got ripped up by the gust. It slammed straight into the wall. The wall — built of laterite stone about two years ago as a shelter — gave way instantly. Debris trapped dozens. Six people died on the spot. At least 12 others were rushed to hospitals in Jat, Miraj, and Vijayapura.
Who they were
They weren't strangers. They were families on a yatra. Police identified them as Shankar Aba Lokhande, 80, and Mangal Bhausaheb More, 45, from Pandozhari; Sangita Ram Chaudhari, 42, from Karnataka's Vijayapura; 14-year-olds Arun Vishnu Gejge and Sonya Laxman Gejge, also from Karnataka; and Kondiba Rauba Gejge, 65, from Sangli. Two children. That's what's making this hit harder.
Why it collapsed
Officials aren't sure yet. India Today reported it as under-construction. Hindustan Times says it was built two years ago. Either way, it couldn't take a storm hit. Sangli SP Tushar Doshi said the tin sheets acted like a battering ram. The district's now probing whether it was poor construction, bad maintenance, or just freak wind.
Locals say the temple sits in a fairly isolated spot, 3 km from Motewadi. There's no proper shelter for the Tuesday-Friday-Sunday rush. People improvise. That's the problem.
Reaction
PM Narendra Modi posted on X within hours: "Deeply pained... My thoughts are with the bereaved families." It's the right words, but families want more than condolences. BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar, who visited the site, said devotees were there for a religious vow — many offer goats at this shrine. They didn't expect to die seeking blessings.
What happens next
The injured are stable, doctors say. The district's ordered a structural audit of all temple walls in Jat taluka. Don't hold your breath — these audits rarely happen until after a tragedy. For now, the temple's quiet. The debris is cleared. But the questions aren't: why was a 9-foot stone wall so close to a gathering spot with no wind bracing? Why no permanent shelter for 350 people on a storm-prone evening?
It's not just Sangli. It's every small shrine in Maharashtra that sees big crowds and has zero safety checks. Until that changes, we're going to keep counting bodies after prayers.
