The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) set a new global record in March 2026, processing over 20 billion transactions worth approximately ₹18.4 lakh crore in a single month. The milestone underscores India's position as the undisputed leader in real-time digital payments.

NPCI data shows UPI now accounts for over 72% of all retail digital payments in India, up from 56% two years ago. The platform has expanded beyond person-to-person transfers to become the backbone of e-commerce, bill payments, and even cross-border remittances.

"UPI is not just a payment system — it's a public digital infrastructure," said Dilip Asbe, CEO of NPCI. "Its success has inspired over 15 countries to develop similar systems."

Singapore, UAE, France, and Sri Lanka now accept UPI payments, with Japan and Australia expected to join by the end of 2026. The RBI is working on UPI integration with the European Instant Payment system (SEPA Instant) for seamless India-Europe transactions.
