Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to visit Madhya Pradesh's tribal-dominated Balaghat district on October 1 to meet families of children who died in recent months.
The Visit
Gandhi is to travel to Jalga village in Baihar tehsil and meet the parents of about 30 children. He will also visit the affected tribal areas of Baihar and Birsa. State Congress president Jitu Patwari was to receive him at the Birsi airstrip in Gondia, Maharashtra, from where he would go to the village by road.
What Happened to the Children
More than 30 children have died over the past few months from suspected infectious diseases. A probe linked the deaths to several conditions, including:
- Malaria and measles, and co-infection of the two
- Malnutrition and anaemia
- Pneumonia, dehydration and shock
A Political Row
The deaths have become a political issue, with questions about nutrition, water and healthcare access in tribal areas. This is Gandhi's second visit to Madhya Pradesh in 13 days.
