CBDT Extends Tax Audit Deadline to Oct 21, ITR to Nov 21
Extra breathing room for auditors and business owners. CBDT has pushed the tax audit report date to October 21 and the return filing date for audit cases to November 21.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended two key deadlines for Assessment Year 2026-27, giving audit-case taxpayers an extra 21 days.
The New Dates
- Tax audit report: extended from September 30, 2026 to October 21, 2026
- Income tax return for audit cases: extended from October 31, 2026 to November 21, 2026
The extension was announced in a CBDT press release dated September 28, 2026.
Who Benefits
It applies to specified taxpayers covered under Section 139 of the Income-tax Act, 1961. In practice that means companies, taxpayers whose accounts must be audited, and partners of such firms.
Who Is Not Covered
Salaried individuals and others without an audit requirement are not part of this extension. Check your own due date before assuming you have more time.
