A collaboration between Google DeepMind and IIT-Delhi has produced a neural network that learns abstract concepts — like object permanence, gravity, and spatial reasoning — not by reading text, but by interacting with simulated physical environments, much like a toddler explores the world.

The system, called "CuriOS" (Curiosity-driven Observation System), was trained in a rich 3D simulation where it could push, pull, stack, and drop virtual objects. Over 10,000 hours of simulated play, it independently discovered physical principles that took traditional AI systems millions of labelled examples to learn.

"Language models are incredible at text, but they have no grounding in physical reality," said Dr. Prateek Jain, lead researcher from IIT-Delhi. "CuriOS builds intuitive physics from experience, not from reading Wikipedia articles about physics."

The implications are significant for robotics, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation — domains where understanding the physical world is as important as understanding language. Google has announced plans to integrate CuriOS with its Gemini AI platform by 2027.
